Listeners hear sound quality first
In the first seconds, people rarely score your grammar. They hear:
- English r where Spanish wants a tap or trill
- Vowel glides (*hola* → “hole-uh”)
- Breath on h (*hola*, *hablar*)
- Stress that follows English (*PA-pa* for *papá*)
Secondary tells: English v on *vino*, aspirated p/t/k, splitting ñ.
Close them in order
| Signal | First move |
|---|---|
| Single r | *better* → *pero* |
| Trill / initial r | more air on a soft tip |
| Vowels | hold [o]/[e], cut the glide |
| Silent h | start on the vowel |
| Written stress | say the marked syllable |
